Project Details:

Exhaust fans are used in many attics and commercial buildings to draw out warm air out of the structure causing a cooling effect and air draft for that space. As you can expect, a dog box or trailer will warm up fast with a dog’s body heat. Exhaust fans or blowers can be easily installed with minimum cost and effort.

I decided to share my project as an example for you to have an idea how to install blowers in your box or trailer. Of course your box design may vary from mine. My dog box is a Creative Sports Model DT700. It is a 3 hole with a 5” storage compartment on top giving me sufficient space for the install.

My concerns of installing the fans were to keep them out of the weather and all wiring out of the area of the dogs to prevent chewing. All components are inside the storage compartment. I installed the switches outside the box so I would not have to open the storage compartment to turn the fans on or off. I used rubber grommets to protect the switches on the out side the box. Cowl vents are the key to getting the air outside the box without exposing the blowers. I used a rubber coupling to connect the blower and cowl vent.

Another key factor is having the option of taking the dog box out of your truck or SUV. You need something that quick connects the wiring from your battery to the box. I used 24V Trolling Motor plugs for this connection. The plugs are simple, waterproof, and reliable.

Holes are drilled in the storage floor bottom / dog space top, such that the air can flow up out of the dog space. I mounted my two blowers so that each of them would take air from two dog spaces or in other words, on the centerline of the dividers. The bowers are used to take air outside the dog’s space on non-windy days or while traveling. On windy days, simply open the storage compartment to create a breezeway.

Please scroll down for step-by-step demonstration of how my project was done. I hesitate to give you any dimensions. I created this page only as a guide for your project. You will have to get creative and work out the details for your box or trailer. You can click on any of the pictures for a larger view. Also I will answer as many questions that I can through email. Good Luck!!!

Step I: Locate and Drill Cowl Vent Holes

The hardest part of the installation is locating the holes for the blower / cowl vent connection. You need the cowl vent to line up with the blower when both are secured. Inside the box, I simply placed blowers in the location that I want to mount them and marked it with a permanent marker. I then found the center and drilled a small hole. It is easier to drill out the big hole for the cowl vent from the outside the box. Use the XXX hole saw for this.

Step II:  Install Cowl Vents

The cowl vent that used was a two-part unit. I took it apart by removing the screws. I then used it for a template for drilling the holes to secure it to the box. Then I put the cowl vent back together and put it in place. I used three rivets from the inside of the box to secure it to the box. (Note: The screw type that is used on these vents is hard to find. So getting longer screws was more trouble than it was worth. Rivets were the way to go.)

Step III:  Install the Blowers

Slip on rubber coupling onto the cowl vent inside the box. Then slip in the blower and mark the two holes for securing the blower. Remove blower and drill out holes. Next slip the blowers back in and secure them with a nut and bolt. Make sure you put the flow facing out of the box. Put the bolt in from the bottom to prevent any injuries to the dog. Tighten up the hose clamp on the rubber couplings.

Step IV:  Build Suction Assembly

Trim your 90 elbows as shown in the picture. Then cut your pup-piece of pipe. Put the two together and slip on the assembly to the blower with a rubber coupling. The Suction Assembly will insure that the air will be channeled out of the holes you cut in the storage floor bottom / dog space top. This may not be necessary but it’s insurance.

Step V:  Cut More Holes and Install the Suction Assembly

Mark the storage floor bottom where you need to cut the intake holes. Remove suction assembly and drill out the two holes. Slip suction assembly back in place and secure using the hose clamps. Of course if you choose not to use the suction assembly, simply drill the holes where desired.

Step VI:  Drill Holes for Switches and Plug

Locate and drill holes for the switches and trolling motor plug. Install the switches. Secure the plug with rivets. Make all connections and run necessary wiring.
